Plainfield South High School students took the classroom outside in Patrick and Samantha Scalan’s environmental and AP environmental classes. They spent time at Hammel Woods with the Will County Forest Preserve.

Students applied what they learned in the classroom to the stream, where they participated in an ecology study collecting samples for macroinvertebrates.

They also removed invasive species to help restore the forest, studied dead trees, and completed a succession hike.

"Students were able to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom firsthand with these hands-on experiences, and many of them are interested in studying a field that has something to do with ecology or environmental science upon graduation,” said Samantha Scanlan.

PSHS and the Will County Forest Preserve’s partnership is over a decade old.
