PNHS senior organizes District 202 high school science fair

Plainfield North High School senior Nick Lowe is organizing a district-wide high school science fair.   Plainfield North High School senior Nick Lowe is organizing a District 202 high school science fair to be held in January 2019.

The District 202 High School Science Fair will be from 7 a.m. to noon on January 26, 2019 at Plainfield North High School, 12005 S. 248th St.

It is open to all grades at Plainfield High School-Central Campus, Plainfield South High School, PNHS and Plainfield East High School.

Teams of up to four people from the same high school can compete. The $12 entry fee will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Students can enter projects in biology, chemistry, physics and an “other” category, Lowe said.

High school students can register online by November 20, 2018 at https://sites.google.com/prod/view/plainfieldsciencefair.

Lowe thought of the idea because there is no districtwide science fair, he said. He has never entered a science fair, but he said he and his friends do their own projects at home.

For example, he said they have built a two-story treehouse, a robotic spider and a potato cannon with PVC pipe and a barbeque grill ignition starter.

Ginger Brest, PNHS Division Chairwoman for the Math and Science Department, said she is proud of Lowe for taking the initiative on this project.

“I hope that students in our school as well as our sister high schools take advantage of this opportunity to share their knowledge and passion for science,” she said.
