Word of the Day:  Respite (noun)

Meaning: delay; postpone; a brief interval of rest.

In most places, summer brings a much-needed respite to teachers and students alike.

 

SPORTS:

Interested in our Cougar Dance team?  Tryouts are May 15th and 16th from 4:30-7:00, Thursday May 17th starting at 3:30, don’t forget to have your physical on file before then!  Tryout meeting will be Thursday May 10th at 4:30.  Open gyms are as follows: Thursday April 19th-26th and May 10th.  See the Dance Flyer or Coach Fisher for more info.

Come join our boys’ volleyball team next Tuesday, 4/24 at their Volley to SCORE game! Varsity and Freshmen A play at 5:30 and JV and Freshmen B at 4:30! There will be raffle baskets, baked goods, pizza, and t-shirts for sale! We will also be throwing out t-shirts before the varsity match! Proceeds will be donated to our own SCORE program at Plainfield South, so come out a support your Cougars for a very good cause!

 

KUDOS:

“Plainfield South had 10 students compete in the STATE drafting competition this past weekend. Please congratulate them on their hard work. Special mention to JT Dunham for placing 3rd in 3D Architecture as well as Mike Mardula, Josue Jimenez, and Paul Schade for placing 4th in Architectural Design Team.”

Last Wednesday, the Literature Club participated in the 2018 Southwest Prairie Literary Festival at Plainfield North High School. We are pleased to announce the winners. Rachel Wisniewski won 2nd place in the poetry category and an honorable mention in Dramatic Scene. Kyah Joseph won the Critic’s Choice Award for her Descriptive Sketch. In the Critical Essay category: Honorable Mention went to Lizzie Gleason, 3rd Place went to Skye Jones, 2nd Place to Jake Maro, and the Critic’s Choice Award went Sarah Tretina. Lastly in the Personal Essay category: 3rd Place to Alex Welter and 2nd Place to Anna Tedder. Congratulations to all the winners!

 

STUDENT & COLLEGE NEWS:

 “The Rosemary Finn Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Rosemary Finn - department chair, teacher and mentor at Plainfield South High School for 9 years.  A one-time $500 scholarship will be presented to a senior from Plainfield South who reflects a personal love of mathematics and education and plans to pursue a degree in a mathematics-related field or Mathematics Education. The deadline is April 24th and the application is now posted in Naviance. See Mrs. Ursetta for more details if you need assistance.”

 

IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T HEARD:

Attention Juniors:  You must get your meningitis vaccine before the first day of school or you will not be able to start your Senior year.  If it is not on file by August 1st you will not be able to view your classes on-line and will be at risk of losing a class you chose.  Please take the proof of the vaccine to the Nurse’s office by the end of your Junior year to be ready to start your Senior year.

Student Ambassador applications for 2017-18 are available in Student Services. If you want to help transfer students feel welcomed by getting to know our transfer students, give tours and be a friendly face to sit with at lunch, please apply! They are due May 4th.

Come support your fellow classmates and the Dance Team as they compete in the 1st Annual Dancing with the Cougars competition next Friday, April 27th at 7pm in the auditorium.  Only $3 admission to see who will win the Mirror Ball Trophy!
